Abstract

EN Topographic measurement of parts of inadequate size or limited access for measuring is a common problem in industry. To this end, replication methods aim to solve this issue. This study tries to assess the suitability of replication using two materials to evaluate surface quality when accessing the measuring zone is difficult. The specimen was AISI 1045 steel machined using electro-discharge machining (EDM). Nine textures were created with the same electrode but under varying machining conditions. Two commercial silicones have been used as replication material. The surface topography of the specimen and the two silicone replicas was measured using 3D profilometry. The results of the surface parameters confirm that the replica material behaves differently when replicating the surface topography. The additive silicone allows for more detailed replication of the EDM surface of the specimen taken as reference.
