EN Review of railway information systems in Poland and the need of their modernizations

EN The comparison of implementation of information technologies by Polish railways and by leading European railways shows that the needs in this respect in Poland are enormous. The company Polish State Railways S.A. is now faced with the need to upgrade and extend its information system presently used and to implement new solutions in the areas not yet covered by the information technologies. Currently used applications can only provide descriptive information about objects of railway infrastructure. However, since certain time there is a need to provide to users also the access to information on localization of these objects. The direction indicated by Geographic Information Systems is undoubtedly the right one and most desired. The paper contains a review and general characteristics of existing information systems usually applied by railways. Results of the research prove the usefulness of taking geographic information into account in the Railway Information System. In addition, the paper provides analysis of usefulness of QuickBird satellite images from the point of view of the possibility to use them in creating the graphic part of the Railway Information System.
