EN Concrete is a dominant structural material in the Polish bridge engineering. Therefore, the codes applied for designing of RC bridge structures are of prime importance influencing their structural solutions with respect to safety and durability as well as economy. In the paper, fundamental differences between dimensioning of RC bridge cross-sections performed using previous Polish standard PN and obligatory at present standard PN-EN (based on Eurocode 2) are discussed, especially with respect to the Ultimate Limit State (ULS) and Serviceablity Limit State (SLS). The discussion is exemplified by calculations of several types of RC cross-sections most frequently applied in bridge engineering. The calculations show some controversial results concerning among others a considerable differences in the amount of reinforcement required to fulfil a relevant conditions in the above two standards. Some more general conclusions which seem to be useful for bridge designers are also formulated at the end of the paper.
