Abstract

EN This paper tackles the problem of resource-efficient traffic management through the application of the WiFi offloading concept in cellular networks. It presents the concept of an Integrated Femto-WiFi Network, and analyzes two radio-resource management strategies from the cost and energy-efficiency perspectives. It strives to assess and discuss the benefits for the network operator of applying the proposed intelligent dynamic traffic distribution among femto and WiFi networks. It shows that such solutions can be used not only for load balancing but also for energy saving since they provide the option of switching down unused base stations, leading this in `greener' system operation solutions.
