EN This article aims to answer whether an architect can evoke the spirit of a place out of nowhere, in a remote location, far from the city, and devoid of cultural context. Methods used include literature and archival materials analysis related to the selected case study, Salk Institute in California. As a result of the conducted research, the critical stages of the project and the architect’s decisions that led to the creation of this unique place were detailed. The conclusions indicate that the architect can evoke the spirit of a place seemingly out of nowhere. Seemingly, because it owes its success to a complex and developed design methodology.
PL Celem artykułu jest odpowiedzenie na pytanie, czy architekt może wywołać ducha miejsca znikąd, w lokalizacji odległej od miasta i pozbawionej kontekstu kulturowego. Zastosowane metody obejmują badania literaturowe oraz analizę materiałów archiwalnych dotyczących wybranego studium przypadku, Instytutu Salka w Kalifornii. W efekcie badań wyszczególniono kluczowe etapy projektu i decyzje architekta, które doprowadziły do powstania tego unikatowego miejsca. Wnioski wskazują, że architekt może przywołać ducha miejsca pozornie znikąd. Pozornie, ponieważ sukces jest efektem złożonej i wypracowanej metodologii projektowania.
