EN Purpose: The aim of the study is a comparative analysis of selected concepts of the general theory of quality, including the identification of the similarities and differences between the concepts of the division of quality science, characterization of the terminological conventions and indication of the directions for future studies. Design/methodology/approach: The method of literature analysis was used in the work, so as to demonstrate with this method what we know and what is contained in the literature, and what does not exist and should be known by research. Findings/conclusions: Selected concepts of the research subject of the theory of quality and its place among other scientific disciplines, the basic objectives of quality science and selected elements of the terminological convention were summarized. The distinguishing features of the general theory of quality in terms of selected representatives of the Polish School of Quality were recognized. Research limitations: The considerations refer to the research results of representatives of the Polish School of Quality, i.e., R. Kolman, W. Mantura and T. Borys, whose publications make a significant contribution to the development of the general theory of quality. Practical implications: The systematics of the general theory of quality creates an opportunity for the unification of research approaches, integration of developed methods and solutions to quality problems. Originality/value: The paper refers to the concept of qualitology, understood as an interdisciplinary field of knowledge, shaped on the basis of existing achievements of sciences and knowledge derived from practice, the theory of a specific concept, i.e., the theory of quality.
