Abstract

EN The present study investigates the withdrawal strength of hexagon head wood screws. Hexagon head wood screws can be used in composite structures, for example, for joining aluminium beams and LVL panels. Two types of LVL, i.e., LVL R and LVL X, as well as specimens with and without pilot holes were used in the laboratory tests. The tests revealed that neither the LVL type (R and X) nor the pre-drilling (dPD = 8 mm) had any impact on the withdrawal strength. After the tests, the 5% quantiles of the withdrawal strength from the tests were compared with the characteristic withdrawal strength calculated from the standard EN 1995-1-1. Furthermore, a load–displacement model of the hexagon head wood screw subjected to withdrawal was presented. It may be used for modelling a composite beam, in which connections are reflected with non-linear discrete springs.
