Abstract

EN This study addresses a stress analysis of elements with a steel cold-formed sigma cross-section that are uniformly loaded in a plane parallel to the web but not passing through the shear centre. This type of load application is very common in engineering practice and corresponds to the application of a load to the cross- section's upper flange. It typically causes an extra torsional moment. This paper focuses on normal stresses from the bi-moment as well as shear stresses from restrained and free torsion. The contribution of these stresses to section utilization was assessed using the example of a sigma cross-sections Σ140x2.00, Σ140x2.50 and Σ140x3.00 with the static scheme of a simply supported beam. Furthermore, the paper included a stress analysis for various load locations at the upper flange. All numerical calculations were made using analytical approach based on Vlasov beam theory.
