Abstract

EN As civilizational problems proliferate – because of, for example, rampant urbanization with cost- and energy-efficient architecture (fast-form architecture) – there arises the need to introduce alternative methods of designing human environments. The first stage of that process is the implementation of a new model of teaching architecture. The existing model prefers development based on formal imagination alone, and on the related graphical and technical skills, while soft skills are omitted. The architects educated in that way design buildings in which the relationships between their users and the place are, so to speak, monovalent. When an architectural form which is not related to the place is ascribed dominant meaning, authentic multisensory experience of it is replaced with momentary excitement. The alternative educational model should be focused on these three aspects: designing haptic architecture, developing situational imagination, and solving problems in context (designing places instead of buildings). That model relies heavily on workshops the program and course of which allow students to come into contact with the subject matter of architecture, that is, the place, the inhabitants’ needs, the material, and the technology.
