EN Anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic waste sludge is a sustainable process as it recovers energy from the biogas and replaces fossil fuel usage and minimizes greenhouse gas emissions. Biogas production from different waste resources still has limitations due to its complex structure and slowly biodegradable nature. Therefore, pre-treatment technologies have emerged to enhance methane production and thus the energy output from the AD process. This chapter described the recent trends, progress, and research achievements in pre-treatment technologies to improve anaerobic digestion efficiency. The pre-treatment technologies adopted mainly physical, chemical, thermal, and other advanced processes to enhance methane production in are elaborated. In addition, the energy performance, economics, and environmental impact of these pre-treatment technologies are also discussed. This chapter emphasizes the necessity of pre-treatment methods and concludes with future perspectives.
