Abstract

EN People with mobility impairments, whether permanent or temporary, are part of a wider group of people with special needs. Even a person who is physically fit before evacuation may need assistance in an emergency such as a fire. The literature identifies three main types of stair evacuation equipment: stretchers, evacuation mattresses and evacuation chairs, which are developments of medical equipment used by the emergency services. The effectiveness of the use of evacuation equipment depends on the dimensions of doors and stairs in buildings, which is regulated by building regulations in Poland. There are three main categories of staircases: standard, non-standard (technical) and historical, each of which presents different challenges during evacuation. The article presents guidelines for the selection of portable evacuation equipment depending on the type of staircase, indicating that evacuation chairs and mattresses are recommended for standard staircases, and stretchers and mattresses for non-standard and historic staircases. The study aimed to identify the key infrastructural factors influencing the choice of portable evacuation equipment in public buildings for people with reduced mobility, highlighting the importance of adapted evacuation strategies and the appropriate choice of equipment depending on the type of staircase and building infrastructure, which is key to ensuring safe and effective evacuation.
