EN A potential solution to thyroid hormonal overproduction, where current symptomatic therapy only masks and/or worsens the condition due to a number of side effects, is the use of pro-drugs. Pro-drugs are a modern generation of therapeutic compounds that act with maximum precision and minimal toxicity to other components of the human body. They exhibit enzymatic (in the context of stereo- and/or enantioselectivity) or non-enzymatic adaptation, which may imply specific environmental properties. Pro-drugs in the imidazole group include carbimazole, which reduces the secretory overproduction of the endogenous thyroid gland.
