EN The machining of difficult-to-cut materials such as Inconel 718 certainly poses many problems. Threads made in this type of material are a special case, as their manufacture is one of the most demanding turning operations. The high cutting forces occurring during this process often cause deformations of thin-walled parts. The authors of the present study decided to evaluate the quality of threads used in aircraft engines. Microscopic metallographic tests were carried out for three types of external threads, differing mainly in their profile angles. Micrographs of selected thread fragments were taken and then compared with respect to the differences and similarities. In order to better explain some of the deformations, these images were compared with surface topography images. The influence of temperature and cutting forces on the overall microstructure image was noticed. Attention was also drawn to the burr that occurred in trapezoidal threads. The side surfaces of threads with larger angles were characterized by the presence of regular irregularities. These changes were confirmed on the surface topography images. Potential reasons for the obtained results were indicated.
