Abstract

EN The transition period in the transformation of the energy industry from fossil fuels to renewable sources is based on the use of natural gas, including local deposits with high nitrogen content. The main goal of the study was investigation of nitrogen influence on methane flames in swirled combustion process in model gas turbine combustion chamber. Flame stability, heat transfer and toxic compounds emission like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide were studied. It was shown that when the air fuel ratio decreases, emission falls twice between the lowest and the highest equivalence ratio; adding nitrogen to fuel contributes to a significant reduction in NO levels; even 20% volumetric addition of nitrogen causes high NO emissions drop; rise of N2 share in the fuel shifts the heat release zone towards the burner outlet; additional nitrogen flux in the fuel lowers the local oxygen content and alters the flow within fuel injection zone. Carbon monoxide emissions were negligible. It was concluded that nitrogen diluted natural gas can be burned in gas turbines while maintaining low toxic emissions. This work can further enhance the utilization of non standard natural gases to help mitigate carbon neutral energy system transformation issues.
