Abstract

EN The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of mid-temperature alkaline pre-treatment with NaOH and a mixture of NaOH and Mg(OH)2 on wasted activated sludge (WAS) disintegration, methane yield and digestate dewatering properties. The use of small doses of 13.6 g NaOH/kg TS and 30 minutes of heating at 60oC, allowed to obtain the degree of sludge disintegration of 25%. As a result, the methane yield increased by up to 11% in a 21.5-day anaerobic digestion trial. Application of 10.2 g Mg(OH)2/kg TS for pre-treatment allowed to obtain the dewaterability of digestate similar to non-pretreated WAS.
