EN Among the weakest structural elements (to accidental or intentional explosions) are the columns of multi-storey buildings. Hence, the study proposes the use of sandwich panels as a protective technique for existing/new steel columns. A core of six cross-arranged, uncon-nected, graded, trapezoidal aluminum sheets was chosen. Two Protective Techniques (PT-1 and PT-2) have been designed based on the way the column is covered and the width of the sandwich panels. The numerical analyses were carried out using Abaqus/CAE and solved used Abaqus/Explicit solver. The results obtained from the comparative study confirm that sandwich panels can be an effective protection technique for steel columns. However, as the exposed area to the shock wave increase, the effectiveness of the solution decrease.
